Catholic Athletes for Christ, Knights of Columbus, Denver Broncos and Jack Del Rio Foundation partner on “Coats For Kids” Program for underprivileged children in New Jersey during Super Bowl week

The XLVIII edition of the Super Bowl was played yesterday February 2nd, at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, between the AFC champion Denver Broncos and the NFC champion Seattle Seahawks where the Seattle Seahawks defeated the Broncos 43–8.

But in the previous days, the association Catholic Athletes for Christ, the Knights of Columbus, the Denver Broncos, and the Jack Del Rio Foundation partnered  to distribute warm, new winter coats to needy children in New Jersey.

The “Coats for Kids” event was held at Sacred Heart Elementary School in Jersey City and coats were distributed to students, the vast majority of whom come from low-income households. The event featured several Denver Broncos players and coaches, including defensive coordinator Jack Del Rio and running back Knowshon Moreno. The Broncos were in that area preparing  the Super Bowl.

In addition, retired New York Mets all-star catcher Mike Piazza attended the event representing CAC, along with the organization’s President Ray McKenna. Also in attendance was Knight of Columbus Supreme Knight Carl Anderson and several collegiate student-athletes who are members of FOCUS’s Varsity Catholic program.

Pope Francisco, in his meeting with the soccer players of the national teams of Italy and Argentina told them: "people follow you very closely and not only on the pitch but also off”. Thus it is important to “be an example of loyalty, respect and altruism”, maintaining that “amateur” spirit in sports which benefits society and “builds the common good beginning with the values of consideration, camaraderie and beauty”.

It's good to see there are social and charitable initiatives around these events with those who don’t have the minimum to live with dignity.
