Vatican City, June 18, 2011 - The Vatican press office announced that His Holiness Benedict XVI has appointed Reverend Monsignor Miguel Delgado, who is presently the Bureau Chief and Head of "Associations and Movements Section" of the Pontifical Council for the Laity, Under-secretary of the same dicastery. The appointment comes just over a month since the former Under-secretary, Professor Carriquiry, was appointment Secretary of the Pontifical Commission for Latin America, thus creating the need to redefine the staff of the superiors of the Pontifical Council for the Laity.

Monsignor Miguel Delgado was born in Barcelona, near the Basilica of the Holy Family, on May 22, 1963. Since 1985, he is a member of the Prelature of Opus Dei. He received his degree in Law from the Autonomia University of Barcelona. He attended the World Youth Day in Santiago de Compostela (1989), while he was a young lawyer, practicing law and working for the government of Catalonia. In 1991 he moved to Rome to continue his priestly studies at the Theology and Canon Law at the Pontifical University of the Holy Cross. In 1996 he obtained his degree in canon law. The same year he was ordained a priest in the Rome’s basilica of St. Eugene in Valle Giulia. He returned to Spain for the pastoral work, and in 1999 he was called back to Rome to collaborate with the Pontifical Council for the Laity, where he was an assistant and later was appointed Bureau Chief and Head of the Association and Ecclesial movement’s section.

Msgr. Delgado is the author of several monographs and articles published in journals of canon law.

Our colleagues in the department have received the news with great satisfaction, confident that Msgr. Delgado takes on this new assignment with all the experience that he has accumulated during these years of service in this department, where he has encountered on numerous occasions various ecclesial groups, associations, movements and new communities whom he has personally come to know and assist throughout these years. We assure Msgr Miguel of our congratulations and prayers.
