As many already know, one of the aims of the Pontifical Council for the Laity is to promote the study of specific issues relating to sport, particularly from the ethical point of view, especially when there is a chance to collaborate with other Christian confessions.

The Pontifical Council for the Laity is then proud to support the Faculty of Health and Life Sciences at York St John University, York, UK which will host an Inaugural Global Congress on Sports and Christianity (IGCSC), from the 24th until the 28th August, 2016.

The significant increase in academic research activity and practical initiatives on the topic of sports and Christianity over the last decade, has led to YSJU and the Bible Society to collaborate in the development and delivery of this global event. York St John University campus is at the heart of the beautiful and historic city of York, which boasts one of Europe’s finest Cathedrals, York Minster, in which, there will be a sport-themed service as part of the Congress.

The aims of the IGCSC2016 are to encourage global collaboration between academics, practitioners, politicians, clergy, administrators and athletes and produce quality academic and practitioner publications that have societal impact.

Also the IGCS2016 looks to develop individuals in their sphere of influence through intentional mentoring and collaboration and affect a ‘culture shift’ in modern sport through the sharing of ideas and practices and a ‘coming together’ of individuals from across the academic disciplines and all streams and denominations of Christianity, culminating in an inclusive and ecumenical event.

The ‘Registration’ and ‘Call for Papers’ is now open. Please note that even at this early stage there has been significant interest in this event and delegate places are limited.
