26/11/2012 Last night, a Mass officiated in the Church of Vergine del Carmelo, in Rio De Janeiro, opened the world meeting in preparation for World Youth Day, due to take place in the Brazilian city from 23rd to 28th July 2013. Over 200 youth pastoral delegates from over 75 countries and 40 movements attended the Mass, officiated by the archbishop of Rio, dom Orani Joao Tempesta, with card. Stanislaw Rylko, president of the Pontifical Council for the Laity, which promoted the initiative along with the WYD Local Organising Committee (Col). In his sermon, the archbishop highlighted that the WYD “is part of the Year of Faith and is an event where young people can renew their faith so that they can become ‘leaven in the dough’ and as such the main players in our society through Christ”. This concept was taken up by the Apostolic Nuncio to Brazil, mgr. Giovanni D’Aniello, who pointed out that “the many young people who will be in Rio in July will give the city and the whole country great testimony of cheerful, attractive and mature faith”.
At the end of the celebration, mgr. Tempesta was given a letter from the parents of the Blessed Chiara Luce Badano, one of the thirteen intercessors of the Rio WYD. In the text, that was publicly read, her parents wish the case of their daughter Chiara Luce “may act as an example and as a spur for the life of so many young people, who, even at such a difficult time, are trying to make sense of their lives”. The letter ends with the announcement that Chiara Luce’s parents will be in Rio for the WYD. The conference will go on today, 26th November, with reports from mgr. Tempesta, card. Rylko, and some information about the practicalities and logistics of the WYD (visas, accommodation, registration, security, meals, venues of the vigil and final Mass). On Tuesday, the conference will include presentations about volunteers, translations, the vocational fair and the vocational Week. Wednesday, the day before the departing date, will see a meeting with high municipal, regional and national institutions, the final reports of card. Rylko and mgr. Tempesta, a visit to the sanctuary of Corcovado and a prayer with young people in the parish church of Ipanema.
